He passed his first degree, BA (Hons) in History, at the University of Peradeniya and joined the National Archives as an Assistant Archivist on 01.01.1966. He followed the Postgraduate Diploma in Archives Administration in 1967 from the University of London. He was appointed as the Director of the National Archives on 09.02.1983. He took necessary action to amend the National Archives Law No. 48 of 1973 and prepared retention schedules to dispose of unwanted records in the public sector. He participated in many international seminars representing the Sri Lanka National Archives and published several articles on Records Management and publications on history. He was awarded Honorary Membership of the International Council on Archives (Paris).
